It turns out that Eclipse is not compatible with the latest version of the JDK (1.6.0_u21). On my system, I noticed Eclipse continually froze, solvable only by killing the javaw process. Apparently many others are seeing the same thing since the forum is a’buzz with the issue.

Based on this bug report, it seems the issue lies with the latest version of Java. Nevertheless, I imagine the Eclipse foundation will need to scramble to get a workaround out quickly since this impacts many recent versions of Eclipse.

A workaround suggested on the forum is to add the following code to your eclipse.ini after “-vmargs”:

-XX:MaxPermSize=256m

This workaround seems to work for me. Let me know how it goes for you. Don’t forget, if and when this issue is solved by the Eclipse Foundation or Oracle, make sure to undo the workaround.

One other workaround that I do not recommend is to revert back to 1.6.0_u20.

I’ve been looking for this for a long time. RSS is a great tool for tracking updates in a website rather than visiting the same site over and over again. I’ve been looking for an RSS feed to see what my facebook friends are up to for a long time. I finally found out how to do it at this post. The only caveat is most of us are interested in our friends’ status updates. You have to do a little magic (explained in the post) to make this work.

Thank you jwz

I need your help. How do you define which is your child’s first word? I’ve been thinking about this for years, ever since my son first began talking. And I need your help to finally resolve the question.

He was a late bloomer in the speech category. But when he began talking you couldn’t stop him. One great experience was when Clatus was 2 1/2 years old and we were visiting Whistler, British Colombia. We were pushing the stroller around when out of nowhere, Clatus said, “Let me push.” Wow! His first sentence. Up until then, we were lucky to get a word out of him.

Back to my “first word” question. I need your help to figure out which one it was. The first sound coming out of his mouth resembling a word was “aye-hane” meaning “airplane.” Whenever he would look up into the sky, he would let us know there was an airplane by calling out “aye-hain, … aye-hain.” He could even see them clearer than we could. Many times, LeeNette and I would strain and barely see the plane. He clearly saw it well before we could. It’s also amazing to have a first word be two syllables. Has there ever been a child before whose first word is two syllables?

Perhaps you say airplane (aye-hane) isn’t his first word because he didn’t articulate it clear enough. He didn’t say “airplane,” he said “aye-hain.” He clearly meant airplane. If you don’t think that counts, then the next one would be “gun.” He wasn’t actually thinking of an actual gun when he said this word. He just like this sound. So is “gun” his first word?

OK, maybe you say “gun” isn’t his first word because he didn’t intend it to be a word. He was just making a sound that happened to be a real word. You are quite a picky reader here. But I will satisfy you. The next candidate word after is “woof.” One time, when I was holding Clatus, Anakin barked to go outside, which is his custom. On this occasion, Clatus replied, “woof!” apparently imitating Anakin. Is “woof” his first word? According to the second definition of the dictionary, it is a word. However, you may feel uneasy calling that a word because it still feels like he didn’t know it’s a word. He was just making a sound to imitate Anakin’s bark.

So then the last possible first word, which most people will believe is an actual word is “ball”. I held a ball and Clatus pointed at it and said, “ball”. This should satisify even the most finicky critic. If you don’t believe any of the previous words were actual first words, then Clatus’ first word is “ball.”

So there is my dilemma. When people ask me what his first word is, I want to give the best answer I can. Will you help me?

I had trouble with sound in FireFox. No matter what Windows 7 had for Firefox’s volume, no sound would come out. I would even see the green indication of the sound go up and come down with audio coming out of FireFox.

I did find the solution in an article by zarindenatrose. My first give away was that if I renamed firefox.exe to FixFirefox.exe (anything besides firefox.exe) then FireFox played sounds. Clearly there was a problem in Windows 7′s registry. That article described how to delete the problem registry entries to restore Windows 7 (or Vista as the article says) concept of Firefox’s volume. In a later update to his article, he said some people had to delete multiple entries. I did too.

In my search other users had issue with Adobe Flash player but thought the issue was Firefox. If my suggested fix didn’t work, then perhaps your problem is with Adobe Flash Player.

I’m glad that zarindenatrose took the time to make that article. So I’m taking the time to say thank you and add a blog entry.

For Homework today, Clatus had a very tasty science experiment. He had to make a salad dressing and write his findings along the way. This proved to be quite a fun exercise. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Step 1: Gather all of the ingredients together. We need a plastic container, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, and Rosemary.

Step 2: Add vinegar, oil, and shake. Draw what you see.

Step 3-6. Add in the other ingredients and document everything.

What a salad dressing it created. Clatus really enjoyed the science experiment.

Time to try it out.

Survey says?

Clatus’ favorite part was the train that went around the Christmas tree.
So I’m really interested in your thoughts. Does my sales pitch work?

First ask yourself how big is your music collection? You probably have 1000s of songs. So to listen to all of it, you spend over $100 to buy an iPod. You might even own more than one iPod. Whenever you go, you carry your iPod in one hand and your cell phone in the other. Why not put the music on your phone?

“It doesn’t fit” or “How would I get the music onto my phone?”

That’s where the product I lead comes into play. Remix enables you to stream music from your computer to your phone. You can listen to any music in your music collection directly from your PC. Remix will constantly keep your PC and phone in sync. If you add music to your library, you have to do nothing to see it on your phone. Any time you want to listen to your music, it’s available on your phone.

Share your ideas and let me know if you have your own. Would you buy a product like this?
